Sustainable Tourism

Created by two young oceanographers, Plàncton is a company which specializes in disclosure, environmental education and the management of projects related to the marine environment. Plàncton organizes snorkelling activities on the beaches of Ametlla de Mar to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the seas and oceans.

The founders of Plàncton, Eli Bonfill and Aurora Requena, met as students when they were doing a Master of Marine Science. Their passion for the marine world led them both to Ametlla de Mar, in the Tarragona region, where they founded Plàncton in 2012, a company specializing in disclosure, environmental education and the management of projects related to the marine environment.

To raise awareness for the protection of the seabed, the two young women organize touristic activities between June and September on the beaches of Ametlla de Mar. Through their Snorkel Centre, they offer a variety of experiences focused on sustainability, including kayaking tours and snorkelling activities in the unspoilt coves of the area.

With more than 600 participants in the summer of 2015, the activity Living the Snorkel experience in Ametlla de Mar is very popular with holidaymakers. As well as being fun, this activity is also purposeful and reaches a wide audience, as snorkelling requires no training, children and adults can both explore the marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean.

Participants are guided for about 2 hours by a qualified Marine Scientist who talks about the different species seen and the importance of their protection. The activity is designed with a respectful approach to the environment and therefore done without fins, which may cause damage to the seabed. Instructors also focus on the protection of ecosystems by explaining the importance of not walking on the rocks and not touching the fauna and flora.

Our main mission is to raise awareness about the protection of the marine environment. We believe we can have an influence by getting people to know more about the seabed, and therefore create a genuine concern for its preservation.Plàncton

The company also collaborates with Graëllsia, an association for the protection of the natural areas of Terres de l’Ebre.
