Organic Food and Agriculture, Sustainable Textiles & Clothing

Sekem cultivates biodynamic products to make sustainable food, textiles, and pyto-pharmaceuticals to make human development sustainable.

Founded in 1977 by Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, SEKEM has evolved from a biodynamic farm to a holding of companies producing and distributing sustainable food, textile and pharmaceutical products, always keeping at its core the sustainable development principle and community wellbeing values. Nowadays, SEKEM employs 1.350 people in its companies and development foundation and hundreds of seasonal workers. Its products are sold in Egypt, the Gulf States, and countries as far as the USA and Germany.

How do we build a better environment?

SEKEM core activity is growing biodynamic and organic products in specialized farms. The company cultivates almost 17.000 acres of agricultural land, contributing to the creation and preservation of a productive ecosystem on Egyptian desert land recovered through composting. SEKEM biodynamic farms host more than 60 bird species, over 90 varieties of trees and shrubs and a broad range of small animals like hedgehogs, lizards, snakes, mongoose and foxes.

How do we care for our community?

SEKEM tightly integrated economic, social, cultural, and ecological activity, believing that everyone benefits if these areas thrive in balance. Plus, SEKEM directly supports its co-workers’ development through a wide range of training available. They are offered through an adult learning institute, a non-profit university, and a vocational training centre. Moreover, SEKEM is very committed to promoting gender equality in society and the workplace. In recognition of its role in promoting women’s rights, in 2009 SEKEM was awarded the Gender Equality Award by the UN Development Fund for Women.

How do we create economic value for our employees and community?

SEKEM develops innovative products with high added value that respect the integrity of nature. It does so by transforming biodynamically and organically grown produce into medicinal products, textiles and processed food. Its 1.350 co-workers do not only benefit from above-average wages, but also from investments made in the community. The SEKEM Development Foundation runs many community-oriented projects including a kindergarten, school, university, vocational training centre, laboratories, a medical centre, and programs for disadvantaged children.
