Communication for sustainability, Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Waste Management

This project is blending education, play, and environmental responsibility. Are you a parent or educator seeking sustainable alternatives? Read this story!

The story of Netaalem begins during the pandemic lockdown. Imen Akkez, a mother of two young children, found herself facing a dilemma familiar to many parents: how to keep her little ones entertained without resorting to screens? She also noticed that many of the toys she purchased wore out quickly and ended up in the bin, adding to the ever-growing pile of non-recyclable plastic waste. Frustrated with this reality, she felt a deep desire for change. That was when she decided to leave her job and create something new—something that would meet both children’s needs and those of the planet. And so, Netaalem was born: a project that blends education, play, and environmental responsibility.

Building a greener future

Netallam’s toys are made from fabric and designed to grow alongside children. From the very first months of life up to the age of six, the products evolve with little ones, providing the right level of stimulation at each stage. Sensory mats help babies up to nine months old explore textures and colours, while activity books encourage independent learning through playful challenges. Everything is crafted from sustainable materials such as cotton and felt, ensuring safety, durability, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Assembling a sustainable business

In a world where sustainability has become essential, Netaalem stands as an inspiring example of green entrepreneurship. Founded in 2023 by Imen Akkez, the brand was born with a clear mission: to create educational toys that are durable, eco-friendly, and, above all, respectful of children’s development. More than just offering an alternative to disposable plastic toys, Netaalem seeks to transform the way we think about learning and play during childhood.

Connecting the pieces: A community for parenthood

Netaalem’s growth did not happen by chance. From the very beginning, the company focused on building a community of parents, educators, and children who share the same values. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram became showcases for the products, while partnerships with parenting influencers helped expand the brand’s reach. Participating in fairs and events dedicated to childhood also allowed for direct contact with customers. Word of mouth played a crucial role too—parents who saw their children engaged with these sustainable toys helped spread Netallam’s vision to more and more families.

Tackling challenges like a puzzle

Like any pioneering company, Netaalem has faced obstacles. Competing with cheap, mass-produced plastic toys is no easy task, and many families are still unaware of the benefits of sustainable toys. To overcome this challenge, Netaalem has focused on raising awareness, showing how reducing environmental impact does not mean compromising children’s enjoyment. Moreover, product quality sets the brand apart: toys that grow with the child and can be used for years make them a worthwhile investment. Another important step was the introduction of a refurbishment system, allowing toys to be renewed rather than discarded. To further its social commitment, the company also works with individuals in vulnerable situations, creating employment opportunities and fostering inclusion.

A playground for purpose

What Netaalem does goes far beyond making toys. The company believes that educating children about sustainability from an early age is key to building a more conscious future. Green entrepreneurship, as practised by Imen Akkez, proves that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand without compromising quality or purpose.

Netaalem continues to grow, but its essence remains the same: transforming the way children play and learn, ensuring that every laugh and every discovery happens in a more sustainable world. Because the future begins now, and what better way to build it than through play?
